New Farm House

Luxury modernist inspired design meets the classic Queenslander

The existing Queensland weatherboard home, quintessential of its New Farm streetscape was transformed as a renovation and additions project by Vibe Design Group. The home located just outside of Brisbane had a design approach that focussed on the successful integration of old and new.

The modern addition respectfully cradles the old, allowing the existing ‘Queenslander’ to retain its’ prominence to the street. New spaces are carefully integrated with the existing conditions for seamless functionality and an understated harmony between the two styles.

Smaller elements add to great effect. The garage door is hidden amongst the weatherboard cladding while the study roof hovers above the existing pitched roof that completes itself entirely.

Thoughtful integration culminates in an improved outcome for the existing building while taking advantage of all the new elements of the extension.

The idea of maintaining and improving the existing conditions was the key to a truly sustainable solution – woven into the fabric of this Vibe Design Group project.

The New Farm House is unique, the original house was a basic Queenslander common to streetscapes throughout Brisbane and many other parts of Queensland.

The focus for the design was on the transition from old to new – understanding that there must be harmony between the two styles. The result has the new structure cradling the old – which maintains its presence as the prominent building mass to the street façade.

Sustainability

Some of the sustainability measures VDG implemented were thoughtful integration of the new spaces versus the old, 80% of the existing structure was maintained and utilised including almost all of the existing roof structure. The way the roof lines and existing rooms and levels play into the function of the home allowed demolition to be kept to a minimum.

Exacting calculations on the direction of the cooling breezes in Brisbane determined the run of the home – with low sliding windows all the way along the North East wall. Combining with the deep eaves to the North and West the building has the ability to ventilate and cool itself without heavy reliance on mechanical systems.

In this project VDG utilized Weatherboards, Scyon Matrix Cladding System, Glass and Recycled Timber Battens many of these materials are very affordable and low maintenance.

Before and After the Renovation

The New Farm project was very successful in transforming an old traditional weatherboard home, while respecting its style and appeal to the wider area of New Farm.

The result was a house that was well equipped to extend its life well into the future offering the clients a modern floor plan while maintaining all the charm of the existing weatherboard Queenslander.
